What if every child fulfilled his or her potential?
Big Brothers Big Sisters is working to make this happen. For the last 20 years, GVM has been proud to host the Big Brothers Big Sisters Gift Wrap Booth during the Christmas season. Today I met Dwayne, an enthusiastic volunteer, who filled me in on how the gift wrap booth has impacted their organization:
We match adults in the community to kids in need of a mentor or friend and they meet 1 hour each week. They interact by playing sports, shopping, or just hanging out and talking.
Although it’s one of our smallest events, it’s the most saturated and extremely beneficial for getting the word out about our organization.
They are all volunteers, some within our organization, but most are members of the community who want to lend a helping hand. Many businesses send groups of employees over, as well as donate. The community has been very generous.
This event is more about spreading awareness about BBBS then making money. But the money we do raise goes towards the matches- background checks for the big brothers and sisters and spending money for the matches to do fun activities.
It takes us about 15-20 minutes to wrap a gift and we have so many wonderful volunteers that there should never be much of a line. We charge $4.00 and up, depending on the size of the gift. We will wrap just about anything, with the exception of children and animals! We’ll even wrap a mannequin!
